What Is Branding – and Why Is It a Crucial Element of Your Business?

July 24, 2024

I’d like to kick off this blog by posing a few questions to you, reader. Here goes:

  • When you see a red bullseye, do you think of a dart board or do you think of Target?
  • When you see a red and white, cursive font, does fancy wedding invitation calligraphy come to mind or do you think of Coca-Cola?
  • When you hear someone say, “Just Do It”, are you called to do something, or do you think of Nike?

I suspect I know the answers to your questions. And if those answers match mine (I think of Target, Coca-Cola and Nike in all three instances), this is a perfect example of branding – it’s precisely why you know these companies so well.

Branding encompasses several pieces of your business, many of them visual like your brand colors, logo and the fonts you use, as well as your tagline and even the tone of voice in your written communications.

Your company’s branding can appear on your website, your social media profiles and feeds, your team photos and headshots and – if you’re a business that sells products – your packaging and labels. If you’re a business that has a brick-and-mortar store, office or other presence, your signage is another place your branding appears.

All of these are identifying, visual features that can be seen, read or heard. Often, it is your branding that makes your business recognizable to your audience. But more than that, it showcases a consistency and steadiness that builds trust. And trust is one of the main reasons people are driven to action in terms of buying your products and services.

Simply put, branding is your business’s identity. It is the thing (or things) that help shape perceptions and attitudes about your business, whether you’re selling products or services. Branding is not marketing or PR. Rather, it is the foundation from which you execute your PR and marketing efforts.

But I’d go one step further than that to say – branding is your business’s heart and soul. Ultimately, it’s why people like, know and trust your company. It’s…everything.
